Building a shelf

For ages, I’ve been wanting one of those gorgeous triangular shelves that are all over pinterest, so I decided that I was going to build one myself. I had some leftover planks from my old bed, and some dark wood stain so I thought like why not make it out of that? If you’ve read my “What I do on a rainy day” post, you’ve seen these planks already. I stained them, let them dry for a few days before cutting them into equally long pieces. To make that work as a triangle, the corners need to be 30 degrees.

I got my dad to help me cut and measure, because I am super clumsy and would probably have cut my fingers off if I tried to do it myself. Originally I wanted clean corners, but the planks were too thin so they would have split in half when nailing them together. Luckily dad is experienced with building things so he made separate angles to attack the planks to. I really like how it looks. I might have to stain the corners too, but it’s not the worst look in the world with some natural wood in there. I’m just happy the shelf is functional. It’s probably a bit wonky but I love it. Most of my furniture is old anyways so it fits right in.

Have you built anything before?

The Questions

  • Dog or Cat? I’m like 90% a cat person and 10% a dog person.

“Withered + Sere” Review

28507063Withered + Sere is a dystopian, or post apocalyptic novel. It’s the first of two books (as far as I know) and the story takes place in Idaho, after a terrible incident. The world is now a wasteland, with nothing ‘good’ left, only people trying to survive and those called “Dead Rabbits”, cannibals and murderers.

The setting and the plot reminded me a lot of the Fallout video game series, especially since the main protagonist, or antagonist, I’m not really sure what to classify him as yet, has a dog as a companion. That’s the setting of Fallout 4 too. But this world is way more brutal, and grotesque, and the novel is full of graphic descriptions. So if you’re sensitive to gore and mutilation, for example, this is not for you. I can’t handle things like that in a visual format, but text doesn’t affect me as much. I did physically cringe at a few points but it wasn’t anything too bad.

We follow the story of a guy named Cavalo, who after some unfortunate events, ends up with one of the Dead Rabbits in his custody. There is a lot of hostility, some kisses (which just made everything feel more intense because he would be loving a cannibal??) and a lot of bitching. People don’t trust Cavalo, people don’t trust the Dead Rabbit, but the newly formed government needs him and he’s sure as heck not going to give him up. The novel kinda ends at a cliffhanger so I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot, but the Dead Rabbit is very useful.

It’s a really neat dystopian novel, bringing out the best and worst of a post apocalyptic world. The people suck, the government suck, the world sucks.. But people are trying to make the best of it and survive. As a bonus, the novel includes a sarcastic robot, which is pretty great. Reminds me a lot of Codsworth, again from Fallout 4.

If you like dystopian and post apocalyptic fiction, I’d recommend this one. I rated it 5/5 on Goodreads because it’s honestly one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. Well worth it. I’ve already started on the second novel, Crisped + Sere, so I’m looking forward to the continuation of this.

Sometimes happiness comes in a small box

So this week my sister got herself a kitten! She has been wanting one ever since she moved to the city. She has one living with us but driving back and forth to visit was tedious, and she was feeling lonely out there.. So the solution was for her to adopt one herself! Luckily the “landlord” or whatever it’s called let her have one in her condo. (The reason she can’t bring her own is that our three cats have been living together for over a decade so it would be cruel to break them apart). It’s so cute and fluffy. We thought initially it would have rather short fur, but she’s growing up to be such a ball of fluff. I don’t really know what else to say about her because she’s just absolutely adorable. Say hello to baby Luna.

I’m almost always feeling anxious. Most of the time it’s because of other people, but this time about the surgery I’m having on Tuesday. I dislike having to fast because being anxious also makes me feel nauseous often so not having any food in my stomach wont help much. If only my surgery was in the wee hours of the morning instead of closer to noon. I don’t think I’m too nervous about the surgery itself since I’ll be asleep for all of it. I remember not feeling too great afterwards last time I had surgery but hopefully this time it will be better. After I’m done I can probably go back to my old diet too. I don’t even know what the purpose of this post is. I guess I just needed to talk about this. I wish I could stop feeling anxious. I wish we didn’t need food as often.
